Give Me Shelter

GivemeshelterlogoThis week, I became one of The Frederick News-Post's first citizen bloggers. They have a wide variety of blogs, but mine is a little different. It's a youthful, down-to-earth, hyperlocal approach to home & garden, called "Give Me Shelter" -- Check it out!

Kal (Kalmia)
July 4, 2006 - October 12, 2007

It's been over a week since we lost our sweet little Kal. Once he was diagnosed with FIP, there was nothing we could do except ease his discomfort. We'll always feel sort of lost without him, but we're fortunate to have many happy memories of his time with us.

Christopher wrote a really nice tribute to Kal:

Back from Maine

We arrived back in Frederick a week ago from a fantastic trip to Maine! We posted our photos in a new album.

As Seen in PA

As always, I saw a bunch of neat things in Pennsylvania this past weekend, including a mama turkey herding her babies across the road when I took a dirt road detour for some maple syrup. Unfortunately, there are no photos of that particular sighting. Here are some other fun things I saw:

Jack-In-The-Pulpit, an endangered wildflower, just grows randomly next to my parents' wood pile. They also have an interesting fern that I wasn't able to readily identify.

Also seen on the maple syrup detour: The old Springville school. Apparently it's now home to art studios. I always thought this building was amusing because there's a separate entrance for boys (on the right) and girls (on the left). It's hard to see in the photo ... I'll have to get closer next time.

Possibly the nicest looking smokebush I've ever seen in real life. I was excited to catch it in full bloom!

All in all, my visit to PA was worth the horrible construction delays on I-81. Next time I'll try Amy & Brian's magical alternate route.

New Album: May & June 2007 Garden

We're happy that we're able to see some progress in our garden this year. We're still engaged in a discouraging battle with the weeds, but the plants we actually want to have in the yard are filling out nicely. Click here to view photos from the past couple months.
